Plug Fest 2009

The Nebraska Tractor Test Laboratory hosted the 10th Plugfest this year. Attended by representatives from the major tractor manufacturers, this event provides an opportunity for developers to ensure that different company devices work together for tractors and implements, to meet international standards, and eliminate the need for separate controls, terminals, and displays.

The University of Nebraska Tractor Test Laboratory is the officially designated tractor testing station for the United States and tests tractors according to the codes of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Twenty-nine countries adhere to the tractor test codes (including non-OECD members: China, India, the Russian Federation, and Serbia), with active tractor test stations in approximately 25 of those countries. The OECD codes require that tractors be tested in the country of manufacture. Reciprocity agreements with the codes require that once an OECD test report is officially approved, it must be accepted by all participating countries.
PTO Shield

Completed Student Project

During his junior year, Nate Kelly designed and built a Power Take Off (PTO) shield for use in the Nebraska Tractor Test Lab. Nate is from Page, Nebraska, and works as a student technician for the lab while studying Mechanized Systems Management in the Biological Systems Engineering Department.

The shield offers protection from any shaft failures that could occur during PTO tests. The shield manually extends and retracts to compensate for the removal and installation of the PTO shaft, and also lifts up and down to accommodate different sized tractors. Nate's design maintains a safer work environment for staff, student workers, and company representatives.
